Energy Storage 101: How BESS Keeps the Lights On

11 March 2026 · Arihant Jain

A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) stores surplus solar generation for use later — after sunset, during a grid outage, or whenever demand peaks beyond what the array is producing in that moment.

For homes and small institutions, this closes the gap that grid-tied-only solar leaves open: without storage, a system without power at night, and any grid outage takes the building offline regardless of how much solar was generated earlier that day.

At larger scale, storage does double duty — smoothing supply for the grid operator and letting commercial sites shift load away from peak tariff hours. It's the piece that turns solar from a daytime offset into round-the-clock power availability.
